San Francisco Bay Area Television Archives (SFBATA) - Collection Access and Use
Registration
Use of the San Francisco Bay Area Television Archives is by appointment only. Please note the fees and registration form must be received and completed for your film research request to be placed in the existing queue. After receipt of the completed registration form, the coordinator will contact you to make an appointment and discuss any questions:
Cydney Hill, Special Collections Coordinator
J. Paul Leonard Library, 1630 Holloway Avenue, San Francisco CA 94132
(415) 405-0309, cyhill@sfsu.edu
Registration
Users of the materials must have a specific project or topic for research and must complete a registration form. All students--SFSU, CSU, and other--need faculty authorization to use the Archives.
- SFSU/CSU Researchers (see attachment)
- Non-SFSU/CSU Researcher (see attachment)
The SFBATA staff will conduct all preliminary research (using provided search terms, dates, proper names, etc.) and will provide researchers with a list of findings. Users/researchers will select those findings that are of interest. If a researcher decides to continue using the collection, selections will be communicated to the coordinator and the researcher will agree to be fully responsible for all technical service fees incurred.
Technical service fees are calculated on an hourly basis and billed directly for the production of a VHS screener of selected material. The screener will be mailed to researchers after payment has been received.
Please allow sufficient time for research; specific items may not be available at this time. Many materials in the San Francisco Bay Area Television Archives have not yet been processed and may not be available.
Users must do their own copyright research. San Francisco State University's Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts, Cinema, and Journalism Departments may be able to provide names of potential researchers.
Researchers using Archives materials in productions are required to deposit a copy of their production in the Archives along with a shot list of footage used. Researchers must have proper authorization from the originating station/copyright holder.
Copyright
Most television programs, including news, documentaries and educational programs, as well as other moving image materials, are copyrighted. Release rights may or may not exist. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives may be authorized to furnish or to allow copying of films and video tapes of television programs and program out-takes.
The collections in the Archives are protected by the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code). Reproductions can be made only if they are used for "Private study, scholarship, or research." It is the user's responsibility to verify copyright and to obtain all necessary permissions prior to the reproduction, publication, or other use of any portion of these materials, other than that noted above. Faculty is responsible for appropriate use of copies shown in the classroom.
If a researcher uses this material or a copy of it in excess of "fair use," that user--and the originating station if the user is authorized by the station--may be liable for copyright infringement. San Francisco State University and its employees have no control over the ultimate use of loaned or copied archive materials and assume no responsibility or liability thereof.
