Computer Labs

Overview

All SF State students, staff, and faculty with a valid OneCard/SF State ID can use the Library computer labs. Some Library users who do not have a OneCard/SF State ID may also be able to use the Media Access Center Lab. Faculty may also be able to use the Academic Technology lab on the 4th floor

All users are required to follow SF State policies regarding computer/Internet use and copyright:

Computer Lab Locations

Other Computers in the Library

A large number of other computers are also available in the Library. Unlike the computers in the Labs, these stations do NOT provide access to a full suite of software applications. Non-computer lab computers require users to Sign-On using either their SF State ID or a Guest Card. Use is limited to 2 hours per day for SF State students, faculty and staff, and 1 hour per day for Guest users.

Software

Over 50 software programs are available for both Microsoft Windows and the Macintosh--from word processing and accounting to advanced multimedia editing and web design. To see a complete list, go to the software list for each lab: J. F. True Lab and the Media Access Center Lab.

Hardware & Peripherals

Both labs offer Windows and Macintosh PCs, scanners and printers. The Media Access Center lab has a variety of specialized equipment such as a slide/negative scanner, a large format printer, color printers, and CD/DVD burners. The Media Access Center also offers video editing.

Printing

Lab users must pay for printing using funds on their OneCard/SF State ID card or a Guest Card. The Media Access Center Computer Lab offers color and large-format printing. For more information, see Printing in the Library.

Group Work

Students may work on computers in groups, keeping their voices low, during less busy times in the Media Access Center Lab. Visit or call the lab (415-338-2991) for more information. Otherwise, library computer lab stations are for individual use.

Getting Help

Basic help is available in library computer labs, subject to staff availability. The Library also has a collection of online software and technology handbooks. However, the Division of Information Technology (DoIT) is the department on campus that can offer more extensive help with student, staff and faculty computers and software. Contact the DoIT Help Desk or consult the DoIT training page for classes on the use of computers and software.

While research assistance is not available in the computer labs, the Library offers research assistance on the web, in person and via email. See Ask a Librarian.
