Also includes an interview with Foster City Police Captian Clark Kemsky, who explains that officers incorrectly charged the suspect last night of kidnapping and murder (kidnapping was the only charge). KPIX Eyewitness news report from 28th of October 1974 by Ben Williams in San Francisco featuring scenes from the first annual Hooker's Ball. Includes an interview with Margot St. James, feminist activist and pioneer of sex-positive feminism and advocate of the decriminalization of prostitution with the founding of COYOTE (Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics) in 1973. The Hooker's Ball became an annual event from 1974 onwards and started as a fund raising event for the COYOTE Howls newsletter that St. James published from 1974-1978, in San Francisco. St. James states: "What my goal is, is the complete decriminalization of sex for human beings, even commercial sex." When Williams asks if this event might tear at the moral fabric of society, St. James replies that: "Well they're coming from the moralistic point of view. In fact, we keep their families together because it's a one-sided monogamy that's in this culture and it's the 99% of our customers are married ... if we weren't taking care of them and listening to their troubles they might be beating up their wives more than they do." Marincello was a 2100 acre parcel of land on the Marin Headlands. Includes scenes of Gulf Oil Executive VP Glenn Saunders confirming that nothing has been decided yet and attorney William M. Bennett (1918-2010) arguing against any development on this location: "Do you know that those Golden Gate headlands are featured in a book by the Sierra Club as one of the wonders of the world ... They are for this generation, the next generation ... of the entire world. There's only one view like that. And you should knock off this nonsense at once." Also includes views of large crowds celebrating by the gates to Marincello, which was never actually built upon. He interviews Don Jelinek - attorney for the American Indians occupying Alcatraz - who explains they intend to bring a lawsuit against the Hartford Insurance Company, for refusing to grant marine insurance for the Bass-Tub vessel bringing supplies to the island. This will be pursued under the civil rights act, on the grounds that insurance is being denied because of political descrimination. Ends with Arnow interviewing Indian spokeswoman LaNada Means about living conditions on the island, who explains there are approximately 89 Indians remaining on Alcatraz: "We're going to hold out there as long as it takes to maintain our occupation."... Savio had been dragged off the Greek Theater's stage yesterday by police (whilst wearing a tie). It should be noted that UC Berkeley's Academic Senate met earlier on the 8th and voted 824 to 115 for the five-point proposal made by the Committee on Academic Freedom against control of student speech and political advocacy.... A fight between protesters is shown and many students are seen covered in blood or unconscious on the floor. This footage shows how at times the demonstrations escalated into ugly and chaotic riots. KPIX Eyewitness news report from April 29th, 1969 featuring a press conference given by San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto, who announces an intensification of San Francisco's "crusade on crime" after an April 28th raid on the Black Panther Party's headquarters following an incident that began when a member of the Party aimed a gun at a policeman. Mayor Alioto announces that within the week 150 additional police will be put on the streets to form an "anti-hoodlum patrol," claiming that the officers are a threat "only to the lawless." Alioto goes on to claim that, "the Panthers don't represent constructive change, they don't represent the black community" and vows to continue "strong action against them." KPIX Eyewitness news report from April 28th, 1969 by Rollin Post featuring an interview with San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto after a raid on the Black Panther Party's headquarters following an incident that began when a member of the Black Panther Party aimed a gun at a policeman. Alioto says, "I have pointed out for some time that we ought not to treat the Black Panthers as some kind of a political organization or some kind of a social organization. This is an organization that not only exhorts to the use of violence but trains in the use of violence." Alioto goes on to claim that the Black Panthers "do not represent the black community" and, "they do not represent those strong militants in the black community who are fighting their claims within the system." Concludes with Alioto calling the Panthers "a police problem throughout the country" and he vows to continue taking vigorous action against the Black Panthers. THis children's show aired weekday afternoons on KRON-TV in San Francisco beginning in 1959 through 1966. Includes scenes of Mayor Art telling jokes with his young guests, demonstrating toys and interacting with hand puppets and props. "Mayor Art's Almanac" was the first TV newscast for children in the U.S., and the State of California awarded Finley two gold medals for the feature, in 1963 and 1965.... (more info)
